Demeaning the Office

If you saw Obama’s speech the other night, I wouldn’t be able to tell you anything about it you don’t already know, as far as the content. And I’m not super interested in talking about that. Frankly, what really erked me wasn’t the content, but the context of the content. Presidents make speeches in the Oval Office in times of national crisis quite often. Typically, this is done to reassure people that the situation will be handled. The Oval Office is not the time or place for a campaign speech, for demagoguery, or politicking. But what I saw last night was not America’s President, but the most powerful Democrat advocating his policies. This man claims to want to improve the image of the US abroad. He should worry a bit more about the image of the Presidency as an office, because he just walked all over it.
