More La Nina Consequences-And Disgraceful Comments by A Misguided Politician

You’ll recall that I mentioned before what tornadoes have been up to, but in case you can’t remember, although the data appear to show a rise, this is an artifact of improving detection. If it weren’t, we wouldn’t see violent tornadoes declining. Well, obviously, Tornadoes have had their share of coverage in the news recently. I would like to express my condolences to the victims of these severe weather events. And I would like to say that I think that those who would use these events for political purposes are a disgrace. Shame on you, Senator. You are climatological not smarter than a fifth grader.

What is the real reason for these tornadoes? Actually, it’s probably that same La Nina that made January so cold. See here:

Its kind of an old paper (1999) but its still interesting. Read Joe D’Aleo’s commentary here:

But what is causing the extra power of La Nina?

Hi, fair question. The first answer is-extra? I didn’t say it was unusual did I? The second answer is more complicated. ENSO seems to an oscillatory mode of internal climate variability, and it is measured by looking at the temperature in a specific region of the Pacific Ocean. When cold water wells up from the deep, you get La Nina, when warm water wells up, you get El Ninos. This is just my instinct/gut feeling, but I don’t remember anyone suggesting that Global Warming makes water cold. Further, we seem to be headed into a new Pacific climate regime, similar to the shift in 1976, the “Great Pacific Climate Shift” when the PDO (Pacific Decadal Oscillation) switched phase from positive to negative, except this time it is going the other way (this happens roughly every 50 to 30 years). +PDO has meant more and stronger El Ninos, -PDO should mean more and stronger La Ninas.

I hope that answers your questions. 🙂
